Eliot Earls Studio
Studio_2011
For my 2nd year at Cranbrook, we were given a project to design a small studio for the 2D Artist-in-Residence, Eliot Earls. He owns some property on a lake north of Detroit, MI where he already had a house and wanted a studio/guest house. There weren't mant restraints to the project except the size, which was 300-350 sq. ft. He wanted it to turn from his studio to a guest house easily and also be able to store his 18' kayak. I decided to go with a design that was very similar to a child-like version of a house and I began to really focus on what types of programs could actually go into a 4' thick programmatic wall similar to my thesis project. The space is completely open and empty with everything tucked away into the walls. I added the pull-out deck to the studio in order to open it up to the surrounding woods.
