PULTE MANUFACTURED HOUSING
Competition, 2011
This project was for the Pulte Manufacturing Group. The idea was to create a new type of manufactured housing. I started with my floorplan of the single-wide and began to break it up and re-arrange the spaces. I split the house into 12'w x 18'l modules and moved them around both in plan and elevation. It's impossible to think that one home can be right for everybody, so I wanted to establish a system that could be modified for each individual or family and, in turn, transform, aesthetically, the American landscape. I focused on the interior spaces, attempting to make them more multi-use/flexible.
In this project, I got rid of the ‘spine’ wall and implemented this idea of a box that volumes are inserted into, where only the inside is transformable. The shell would be comprised of attachable/detachable pods for different stages of life that could be sold back to the company to be re-used. There are no load bearing walls on the inside, which means no real renovations if pods are removed or added. It’s just a shell that you are able to pull parts in and out of. Essentially, this project really lends itself to the DIY culture.
